On Friday, December 16, Rebecca Kilgore is performing at the Bijou Cafe, at 7pm.

The East-West Tour!

Hello friends,

I'm going on tour this week, and you can come along. It's being billed as The Karla Harris East-West Tour, and will take place this Thursday and Friday, 11/18-19.

Featured on this tour is Karla Harris, the songbird from Kansas City. Backing her up will be myself on piano, Dave Captein on bass and Todd Strait on drums.

We will begin our tour this Thursday night at Wilf's Restaurant by the train station in downtown Portland, at 800 NW 6th Ave. The curtain raises at 7:30 PM. Call 503-223-0070 for reservations.

Then we hop in the bus, cross the Willamette River and head south to Milwaukie for the next night's show at Arrivederci's Wine Bar at 17023 SE McLoughlin Blvd. The date is Friday, 11/19, and the time is 8:00-11:00. For reservations call 503-659-1143.

The Winter Jazz series began in 1989, and has been a popular tradition for many every since. The band presents traditional holiday tunes, as well as some rare chestnuts, performed in hip and swingin' arrangements.

Born: October 3, 1922

Influential elder (born October 3, 1922 Earl Lavon Freeman) jazz tenor saxophonist originally became known for his work with the Horace Henderson Group during the Late 1940s, and Sun Ra's band in the early '50s. During that period, he also played with his musical brothers, drummer Bruz (Eldrige) Freeman and guitarist George Freeman, (with pianists including Ahmad Jamal, Andrew Hill, and Muhal Richard Abrams). Chicago Tribune critic Howard Reich says, "...For technical brilliance, musical intellect, harmonic sophistication and improvisatory freedom, Von Freeman has few bebop-era peers."

The Chicago Reader's Monica Kendrick adds "He changes everything he touches, mostly for the better, with his swaggering tenor tenderness."

Along with his contemporaries Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, and Clifford -- the founder of the "Chicago School" of tenor players which adapted the work of Lester Young and Ben Webster, and influenced a number of players including Johnny Griffin & Clifford Jordan. To round out the musical family, the saxophonist's son Chico Freeman is also a well-known jazzman.

In the early 1960s, Freeman toured with Milt Trenier and, despite reasonably regular appearances in New York and Europe, the 75-year-old Freeman has remained to this day in Chicago, where you can see him almost weekly at clubs like Andy's, and has been the host of legendary jam sessions, like his Tuesday events at the New Apartment Lounge. You can catch him with the likes of John Young, Jodie Christian, Mike Raynor, Bettye Reynolds, Kurt Elling, and the rest of his musical family. His 75th birthday was celebrated with a headlining slot at the 1997 Chicago Jazz Festival. He joined one of the city's youngest tenor stars, Frank Catalano, in an afternoon set at the 1999 Fest.

Today is Dave Brubeck's 89th birthday. Below is a post that appeared in this blog on 111205. HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS DAVE!

Dave Brubeck is one of the most well-known and loved jazz pianists of all time. The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond lasted for 17 years, during which time they produced the first ever million-selling jazz tune (Take Five), toured the world many times, and introduced enormous numbers of people to the jazz sound. Mr. Brubeck is still touring, and still releasing albums, at the age of 82 (now 89).
This interview originally took place on November 15, 1973 and was conducted by Homer Clark who starts the interview with a question that throws Mr. Brubeck. By the end of the interview, Mr. Clark has Mr. Brubeck talking candidly about music, his sons and Vietnam.

Musical Phenom Releasing Her Second CD at Portland’s Historic Jazz Restaurant.

Kate Davis, award-winning vocalist, bassist and violinist, is coming back from New York and celebrating her second CD on November 27 and 28 for two shows, each night, at a special event hosted at Wilf’s Restaurant in Portland, OR. For the two nights, the restaurant will be reconfigured for maximum seating and sound. The CD features some new arrangements of holiday favorites, and more obscure tunes spotlighting Kate’s many musical talents. She plays bass, sings and plays violin in a duo and quartet setting.

Kate will be featured singing, and playing bass and violin both evenings.

She will be accompanied by Noah Kellman from New York along with Portland jazz legend and mentor Ron Steen. Several of the recording’s contributors will appear as special guests. This unique show will demonstrate not only a fresh take on the holiday music, but a fresh take on jazz.

About Kate Davis:

Growing up as a classical violinist, Kate experienced a variety of musical styles since age 5. When relocated to the Pacific Northwest, she was fortunate to be a member of the Portland Youth Philharmonic from which she is an alumnae after terms as principal 2nd violin, and principal bassist.

Life in Oregon enabled two new passions—coffee and jazz. From then on, the upright bass and voice became her primary musical outlets. Nurtured by the supportive music community in Portland Oregon, she was able to satisfy her hunger to learn and perform.

Recently, Kate achieved national recognition for her jazz bass and vocals. She was named an NFAA "youngARTS" Silver winner, is a four time Downbeat Magazine Student Award winner, a two time participant in the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, and was bassist in the Grammy Jazz Ensemble. Most recently she was selected as a Presidential Scholar of the Arts, which included a White House visit and an opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center. She began studies at a conservatory in New York City this fall semester.

KMHD. Here's to the next 25 years.

It was the first time I've done some programming and board operation at our new studio at OPB and fundraising with KMHD's Matt Fleeger- it was great (my apologies for not remembering what Matt brought in). We played some rare recodings, gems not yet out there in digital form. It felt really good. My thanks and praise go to the very creative staff at OPB. The expertise they provide will secure the future of jazz in Portland with the community support. To the next 25... I played some Sinatra and Basie today from the old vinyl KMHD library, and thought I would look for something close on You Tube, of course I found no Sinatra in the video (he truly has long arms), but this of the Basie Band is full of solo exchanges, animated drumming and dancing.

Erroll Garner never learned to read music, but had an innate sense of music under which he wrote this and others. His ability to play what he heard in his musical mind's eye is legendary.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1921, Erroll began playing piano at the age of 3. He attended George Westinghouse High School, as did fellow pianists Billy Strayhorn and Ahmad Jamal. Garner was self-taught and remained an "ear player" all his life. At the age of 7, Garner began appearing on radio station KDKA in Pittsburgh with a group called the Candy Kids. By the age of 11, he was playing on the Allegheny riverboats. At age 14 in 1937 he joined local saxophonist Leroy Brown. (source:s wikipedia, allmusic.com).

"Sometimes it's easier to get a truckload of contraband across our northern border than it was for Canadian saxophonist Phil Dwyer to get to Portland. See, he was scheduled to record and perform with his old friend and collaborator in European sessions, drummer/composer Alan Jones, who's led some of the most popular and innovative jazz bands in town. Also in the group were wide-ranging pianist and composer Darrell Grant and first-call basist Tom Wakeling. But Homeland Security turned Dwyer back. When Dwyer finally made it-after enough letters, lawyers and emails to fill a truck-the group had only 32 hours together. Now, both CD's they produced in that short time are finally complete. "Night", a live recording of the one gig they managed, will debut at a release concert Tuesday, September 29 ("Day" came out last year). They've called themselves the Bridge Quartet, Jones says, because bridges span chasms and make improbable crossings possible. Sadly, illness will forestall Dwyer's journey south for the release concert; Portland-based tenor player Devin Phillips will take his place."

My next show is a group show, "Music and the Artist" at the Gresham

Barry Johnson has written this and many other articles that focus more directly on KMHD, which is mentioned in this article. It has reminded me of all the other information about KMHD he has provided over the past couple years leading up to the switch of KMHD operations from Mt. Hood Community College (which still holds the license) to OPB's Macadam Avenue facility.

From my perspective, that of a "DJ" or "on air host" for 26 years, the articles have been very helpful. They cover aspects of this juggernaut from outside, that I heard about from inside the jazzway, if you will.

In our age of the Internet and You Tube, this is a most documented radio transition.

THE SWITCH
Just above is some video of "the switch" at 2pm, that changed the operation of KMHD from the studio at Mount Hood Community College on Stark in Gresham Oregon, where it has been since 1984, to the new studio at OPB on Macadam Avenue in Portland Oregon. In the video above, the audio you hear of Frank Sinatra, the last song, is coming from my iphone. I turned it down as I walked into the main control room. OPB's Raoul van Hall is on the phone and president Steve Bass is in the white shirt.

Thanks to OPB engineers who made sure that the beginning of Nina Simone was just quiet and not missing. Thank you Mt. Hood Community College for many years of service to the community and for making the choice to keep KMHD vibrant.

I know it is steeped in high fructose corn syrup but it says a lot- the song of course.

I have been with KMHD since May of 1984 and have watched the transitions. This is another one that is the move to OPB site and operation. I am excited for the possibilities, even thinking about sleepin' in a hollow log and drinkin' muddy water. Thanks. Keep you posted.

He was a professional musician from 1954 until 2009 (in the circuit of Mel Brown,

The Silverton Jazz Festival features many many musicians that have been integral in defining Portland as a jazz hub. Micah Kassell who hails from the Silverton area continues to drive the tradition with diligence, skill, dedication and pigment, in his hair.
